ARIZONA PRESCHOOL
SANTA MONICA, CA
The Arizona preschool project is an adaptive reuse of a three-story 10,000 square foot historical landmark building in Santa Monica.
As a historical landmark, the building’s exterior envelope and entry lobby were protected and maintained in their original condition. Only exterior upgrades for improved accessibility and life safety were permitted.
The interior spaces, however, required a major renovation for the new preschool program. The design of the interior and exterior improvements combined contemporary design with inspirations from the building’s original 1952 Streamline Moderne architecture.
The interior renovations included a full seismic retrofit and a new fire sprinkler system, along with a complete overhaul of the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems.
